Finola Hemp Strain Review

The Finola hemp strain is one of the fastest and shortest cannabis cultivars to grow. It developed in Scandinavian laboratories in Finland in 1995, and many hemp inflorescence growers appreciate it for its diverse characteristics. As a result, this hemp strain could even be considered the 9th wonder of the world.

Of all the hemp varieties I have encountered, Finola is the most interesting because it was bred for food rather than smoking. What’s more, Finola has been subsequently used to develop some of the first auto-flowering types of cannabis.

Whether it arose by mistake or design, Finola has gone mainstream as a hemp variety, and with good reason: it tastes smooth, and the genetics might just have the potential for carrying huge amounts of CBD.

Key Takeaways

  • Finola was developed in the mid-1990s for fiber and hempseed oil production.
  • Finola hemp has medium CBD concentrations proven to have significant medical value.
  • Finola is an earthy yet subtle-tasting strain.

What is the Finola Hemp Strain?

Finola was developed in 1995 with the intention of producing a quick-growing, low-maintenance form of hemp suitable for food-making, specifically for hemp seed oil but also for utilizing the fibers in textiles and clothing.

This plant was finally officially recognized as a type of industrial hemp in Canada in 1998, and in the EU in 2003. It was originally named FIN-314 after the Finnish breeders who formally registered the plant. The genetics of FIN-314 are now widely used to breed several autoflowering cannabis today.

Although I have smoked and enjoyed it, it was never intended for that purpose. It is a low-THC strain with minimal THC, often below 1%, but with high CBD levels in the range of 2-6% and up to 15% in some cases.

Finola Hemp Strain Appearance

Admittedly, when I first saw Finola, I wasn’t overly impressed by its appearance. Sure, the buds are super green and have a select few orange hairs and white trichomes, but overall, the buds look a bit underwhelming.

Hemp strains like Finola aren’t as bright, colorful, or covered in snowy-white crystals as some high-THC strains, but appearances can be deceiving. As I quickly discovered when I smoked it, there’s much more to the Finola strain than meets the eye.

Finola Hemp Strain Genetics

The genetics of the Finola strain remain somewhat of a mystery, something that those Finnish scientists probably could tell us. What I know is that this hemp strain was developed in a laboratory.

Seeing as it’s one of the first official types of auto-flowering hemp, it’s reasonable to assume that the parent strains or its genetics contain elements of cannabis ruderalis plants which are naturally auto-flowering.

Finola Hemp THC/CBD Content

You won’t find any or much THC in Finola, well below 1%, so it’s not a strain that I would smoke if I want to get blasted. It’s just not going to get you high.

However, what stands out is its CBD content, which generally tops out at around 6%, although it has the potential to contain up to 15% CBD. Mine must have had a good deal of CBD because felt more relaxed and slept easier.

Finola Hemp Strain Terpenes

Because of its aromatic profile, many breeders love using the Finola hemp strain to create new buds. This unique profile is thanks to myrcene, ocimene, limonene, pinene, caryophyllene, and humulene.

Myrcene is responsible for the peppery, spicy balsam fragrance in the Amnesia Trance strain and has therapeutic, calming effects. Caryophyllene is powerful enough to deliver a spicy, funky warmth to the nose.

Similar to cinnamon and cloves, it’s best for stress-relieving and reducing anxiety. Limonene is commonly associated with fruity and citrus aromas and has similar effects as caryophyllene.

Ocimene has sweet, fragrant, herbaceous, and woodsy aromas. This terpene can work as an antiseptic, decongestant, and antibacterial. Last, humulene gives subtle earthy, woody, and spicy notes to this strain and is an effective anti-inflammatory and analgesic.

Finola Hemp Strain Effects

For the record, Finola contains none of the psychoactive ingredients that will get you high – I’m talking about THC. But I did notice that I felt wonderfully mellow and relaxed after smoking a good-sized joint of it. I also fell asleep far more quickly than usual and if memory serves, it soothed some of my chronic joint inflammation as well.

Finola Hemp Strain Reported Flavors

Finola has a light but classic CBD flower flavor. That is, it’s nutty, earthy, and sweet but mild and fragrant. The aroma is subtle, as is the flavor. While I certainly take pleasure in the over 15% CBD content, it’s not something you could smoke for its flavor.

Finola Hemp Strain Uses

The Finola hemp strain has numerous applications. One of its beneficial components is omega-3 and omega-6, which are essential fatty acids( EFAs). These are needed to support crucial functions in our bodies, including optimal nerve functions in the brain and central nervous system, which are essential for proper health.

Its seeds are excellent for food use and sources of oil and vegetable protein for human foods and animal feed. For instance, hempseed and hempseed meals can work for all ruminants, pigs, fish, and birds.

Horses benefit from a cup (2-3 dl) of hempseed meal/day. Dogs enjoy hempseed oil, and those with dry skin will benefit from 2-3 tablespoons of hemp seed oil per week. Hens can be fed whole hemp seeds, seed cake, oil sediment, or hempseed oil to produce fine-tasting omega-3 eggs.

Finola Hemp Strain Growth Information

Although the Finola hemp strain is easy to plant and grow, it is understandable that sometimes farmers find it difficult. This cultivar needs the utmost care to thrive and deliver all its benefits.
