How to Weigh Weed Without a Scale

If you are a regular stoner, you are probably in the habit of measuring the quantity of weed you use every day. This is a commendable habit, especially if you do it to avoid overindulging. The key to being a healthy smoker is moderation, so learning how to weigh weed without a scale can be a valuable life skill. Moreover, if you are a medical user, knowing how to accurately weigh the correct quantity of your daily dose of weed without a scale is even more urgent. But, what if you get your new stash of weed on the week and your weighing scale broke down. Would such an occurrence prevent you from enjoying your daily dose of the good herb? After reading this article, you will learn a few tricks on weighing weed without a scale. Want to give some of these weighing tricks a try? We’ve got something for that… guy

Different Measurements of Weed

The different measurements of weed are:

  • A gram is the smallest option available in dispensing stores. They can come in pre-rolled joints containing 1 gram or 0.5 grams of weed. Alternatively, you can buy the bud and grind it yourself.
  • An eighth is 3.5 grams or 1/8 of an ounce.
  • A quarter refers to 7 grams of ¼ of an ounce.
  • An ounce is the largest quantity of weed you can purchase at dispensing stores. An ounce is 28.34 grams.

There are different ways of weighing weed without a scale. Here are three methods that you can use to weigh your weed if you don’t have a scale:

  • The ruler & penny method
  • The DIY method (also known as the Hanger method)
  • Phone apps

Let us review how these methods work.

Ruler & Penny Method

As the name implies, you need a ruler, a penny, and a pivot for this method. This is probably the simplest way to weigh your weed without a scale. It will only require the basic skill of balancing a ruler! The key to using this method lies in knowing the standard weight of a penny (2.5 grams). Any penny made in the U.S. post-1982 weighs 2.5 grams. So with this knowledge, let us set up the scale. You will need a pivot to balance the ruler. A rectangular eraser will do just fine, but you can be creative here. A pen or pencil will also work quite well. Once you rest the ruler on its center, place the coin on one end and the weed you want to weigh on the other. If, for example, you want to weigh 25 grams of weed, you will need 10 pennies as a counterweight to balance the weed at the other end. With this method, you can weigh as much weed as you want as long as the ruler can hold the weight. However, you may have to improvise to weigh weed in quantities less than 2.5 grams.

Hanger Method

The Hanger method is another popular way of weighing weed without a scale. Hangers are preferred because they are pre-balanced. What you need:

  • A hanger
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Two small styrofoam cups
  • Pennies

What to do:

  • Use the scissor to make a hole into the exact center of the hanger.
  • Drill two more holes at either end of the hanger equidistant from the center.
  • Cut the string in two and tie them on either side of the hanger in the holes you just made. Tie the third string in the center hole. This will balance the whole setup.
  • Hang the hanger using the center string and ensure it balances before adding weights.
  • Tie the cups to the strings and both ends, and you are all set!

Like in the ruler & penny method, the pennies will act as the counterweight on one side. At the opposite end, add the weed you want to weigh. Add or remove your weed until you reach the balance point. However, the same challenge arises – you cannot weigh weed in smaller quantities, say, 1 gram.

Phone Apps

You can also download apps to your smartphone. However, be cautious – many of these apps are not accurate or simply do not work. You will need some luck and patience to find a suitable app that actually works. These apps work by ‘guesstimating’ using your phone’s gyroscope sensors. Check user reviews to see what other users say about the app to avoid wasting your time downloading useless apps! Our verdict, however, is that these apps should best be left to parties when you want to impress your friends.

How to Make a DIY Weighing Scale

Alternatively, you can make your DIY weighing scale and accurately weigh your weed. What you will need:

  • A hanger
  • A long string
  • Scissors
  • Two small baskets/styrofoam cups/containers
  • Known weights

What to do: You re-do the hanger method set-up, but don’t worry if you aren’t quite sure how.

  • Use the scissor to make a hole into the exact center of the hanger
  • Drill two more holes at either end of the hanger equidistant from the center.
  • Cut the string in two and tie them on either side of the hanger in the holes you just made. Tie a third string in the center hole to balance the entire setup.
  • Hang the hanger using the center string and ensure it balances before adding the weights.
  • Tie the cups to the strings and both ends, and measure away!

Now you know how to weigh weed without having a scale. Out of the three methods highlighted in this article, the hanger and the ruler & penny methods will likely give you near-accurate results compared to phone apps. You can always make them better by improvising.
